Roscommon vet censured by Veterinary Council

The regulatory body for vets in Ireland considered a report from the Fitness to Practise Committee in respect of Paul Callaghan, Mockmoyne, Boyle, County Roscommon. According to the 2020 Annual Report, it was alleged that Mr Callaghan had in his possession unauthorised animal remedies and failed to keep at his premises a record of purchases and sales, including quantities administered, and incoming and outgoing transactions. Advertisement The Fitness to Practise Committee made findings of professional misconduct in respect of these allegations, and the Council directed, under section 81 of the Act, that Mr Callaghan be censured in relation to his professional conduct.

A teacher trainee was hauled before a fitness to practise meeting after saying he would not hesitate to use images of the Prophet Mohammed in a class - sparking a fierce backlash from freedom of speech advocates.  The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) student had told his course leader he was extremely concerned about the recent case of a teacher at Batley Grammar School who was suspended after he showed an image of the prophet to pupils.  The Batley, West Yorkshire teacher and his family are still under police protection, and the threat to their safety is judged as so severe that even their relatives do not know where they are now living, more than six weeks after fleeing their home.

A spokesperson for the VCI said: “The council carried out five disciplinary sanction hearings in 2020, in which it considered reports from its Fitness to Practise Committee. “Resulting from these hearings, four veterinary professionals were suspended, two for a period of six months, one for a period of three months, and one for a period of two months.” Another registrant, the spokesperson said, was censured – formally reprimanded for breaching the VCI code of conduct – as a result of the disciplinary sanction hearings in 2020.

Family of pensioner left disturbed after care home nurse failed to phone ambulance for dying man THE FAMILY of a man residing in a care home has been left disturbed after a nurse in charge failed to call him an ambulance in a time of medical emergency.  Brian Murphy, who was caring for the pensioner at Avonbridge Care Home in Hamilton, also failed to flush the pensioner s catheter when it was due to be cleaned. The resident had recently returned to the care home from hospital after being treated for urine sepsis.  After being discharged, he took unwell throughout the night and stopped breathing. A decision was made to transfer the resident from his chair and into a wheelchair so that he could be conveyed to a bed.

Vet resolves case over report into alleged misconduct Reporter:   ); High Court proceedings brought by Vet Daniel McCarthy against the Veterinary Council of Ireland, over a finding of alleged professional misconduct against him, have been resolved. The court heard that following discussions between lawyers for Bandon, Co Cork-based Mr McCarthy and the Veterinary Council, which regulates the profession in Ireland, it was agreed that the findings and recommendations against the vet, contained in a 2019 report, be quashed. The report had concluded that Mr McCarthy had engaged in professional misconduct that rendered him unfit to practise as a vet, and the FTP committee recommended that his name be removed from the register of veterinary practitioners.
