Utah reservoir storage already below end of 2020 irrigation season levels

Utah reservoir storage already below end of 2020 irrigation season levels Replay Video Utah reservoirs are reaching new lows, and they’ve hit a grim milestone. The amount of water stored is now below the levels seen at the end of last irrigation season (October), even with three months left of watering. Statewide, reservoir storage averages 58% of available capacity. Hasenyager fears more restrictions may be coming. If this drought continues and we don’t have above average snowpack this winter to help us pull us out of it, we will see additional restrictions, probably mandatory actions, she said. Hasenyager called yellow lawns a “badge of honor” and stressed the importance of conservation. Outdoor watering accounts for 60% of Utah’s water usage, she said.

A new coalition demands end to new Colorado River diversions

The 10 people who spoke at the news conference said they’re part of a new coalition demanding a moratorium on new dams and proposed pipelines, including a proposal to transport Colorado River water to sustain urban growth in Utah. They said they aren’t opposed to new development but that water supplies need to be identified first, especially as the reservoirs on the river have declined to new lows. The coalition also declared that the shortage-sharing efforts Western water officials have undertaken to date have been a failure. They said the status quo is no longer viable and the Colorado River need

New signs encourage people to save water during drought

New signs encourage people to save water during drought and last updated 2021-07-14 16:18:23-04 SALT LAKE CITY — New signs are encouraging Utah residents to save water during the state s extreme drought. “In recorded history, we haven’t seen a drought like this,” said Todd Adams, Director of the Utah Division of Water Resources. The department hopes the signs will change people’s mindsets when it comes to conserving precious water. “We didn’t get the runoff that we needed, our reservoirs are at low capacity, it’s been hot, it’s been dry, it’s just been a bad bad year, water year,” said Adams.
