A Monolith-ic Mystery: from Utah to Ukraine, monoliths appear around the world

It wasn t until Nov. 18 of this year that the first monolith, a three-sided stainless steel structure built and installed by an unidentified individual or group, was discovered in a remote canyon. Spotted by The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources as they surveyed bighorn sheep by helicopter, the monolith sparked a phenomenon. While it’s unknown when the prismatic structure was originally installed, satellite imagery proves it appeared between Aug. 2015 and Oct. 2016. A Dutch journalist later narrowed the timeframe down to between July 7 and Oct. 21, 2016. Some in the art community believe it is a work of art by the late John McCracken — including his own gallerist, David Zwirner. McCracken, who was active from the early 1960s until his death in 2011, is most known for his minimalistic geometric sculptures that were both free-standing and leaned up against walls.

U police urge caution after mountain lion sighting at Red Butte Canyon

No other information about the sighting was provided. It wasn t immediately clear in what area of the canyon the animal was spotted, and University police said they did not have any photos or images of the mountain lion. The canyon, which is located adjacent to the eastern end of the university s campus, is a popular hiking spot and also home to the Red Butte Canyon Research Natural Area. Scott Root, outreach manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said the division did receive a call about the sighting and was in standby mode in case the creature became an immediate threat or made its way toward any buildings at the U. campus. He added that biologists likely wouldn t need to do anything if the animal remains in the foothills and Wasatch Mountains, where many of the state s mountain lion population roams around.
