Heinrich seeks federal funds for states to transition from oil and gas

A shift away from oil and gas could be coming to Congress as U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) sought to provide federal relief to communities that rely on the boom and bust of fossil fuels. Heinrich introduced legislation in the Senate this week to assist state and local governments in transitioning away from reliance on oil and gas. New Mexico could be poised to see significant impacts as federal lawmakers sought to embrace a future with less pollution and lower-carbon energy sources, Heinrich said, and he intended to preserve the viability of oil and gas communities like Carlsbad in the Permian Basin amid the transition.

It’s a history detailed in books such as “Cadillac Desert,” and experienced by anyone who has spent time fishing, kayaking or swimming in the region’s reshaped waterways, or hiking alongside them.

Power surge: With Vineyard Wind on approval track, 10 more reviews in the wings

SHARE A building wave for offshore wind energy surged out of the Biden administration, with March 29 announcements that set a goal of building 30,000 megawatts of capacity and opening up to 800,000 more acres for leasing in the New York Bight. Two weeks later, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management moderated the plan, withdrawing potential leasing areas off New York acknowledging conflicts with commercial fishing, maritime traffic and tourism that will be rife in the East Coast’s most crowded waters. But on a broad scale, it appears to be full speed ahead for BOEM. Even during the Trump administration’s fitful approach to offshore wind, the agency itself worked consistently to make leasing possible for wind power developers.
