Bill honoring 1908 Race Riot site as National Monument re-enters House

Last week, Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, introduced the bill that currently has 19 bipartisan co-sponsors. “The 1908 Springfield Race Riot Site is an important part of our nation’s history that must be recognized and preserved,” Davis said. “As one of Springfield’s representatives in Congress, this is something I’ve worked on for several years, and I’m proud to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to elevate the status of the Site further. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with lawmakers and the National Park Service to achieve this designation for the Site.” During the riot, a mob of white residents murdered at least two Black residents, burned Black homes and businesses and attacked hundreds of people merely because of the color of their skin.

MISSOULA, Montana (Missoulian) Complex plans for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Missoula and Lewistown districts may be up for revision with the change of presidential administrations. “Both plans have been signed by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, but they have not yet been published in the Federal Register,” Missoula BLM Field Manager Erin Carey said on Monday. “I think there may be some changes, but we’re waiting to see what they might be. We expect a lot more communication coming down from leadership shortly.” The Resource Management Plans, or RMPs, guide how the BLM manages its acres of surface land in Montana. The Lewistown District RMP has received the most notoriety, when its local advisory committee was essentially disbanded and 94% of the acreage listed as Areas of Critical Ecological Concern were opened for oil and gas leasing.
