India exports record 20 MT of rice, wheat in FY21 FE Bureau
Defying Covid blues, India exported a record 19.8 million tonne (MT) of rice and wheat in FY21 on the back of attractive overseas prices of the commodities and massive surplus production at home. Brimming official inventory (mainly for welfare programmes) also ensured that no export curb was imposed by the government in a pandemic year.
Rice exports almost doubled to an all-time high of 17.7 MT last fiscal, against 9.5 MT a year ago. Similarly, wheat exports surged to 2.1 MT in FY21, the highest since FY15 and compared with just 0.2 MT in the previous year, showed the official data.
Exports of Indian organic products record $1.04 bln last fiscal
Export of organic products from India grew 51 per cent to a record $1.04 billion in dollar terms during the 2020-21 fiscal compared with the previous fiscal. Since 2002-03, organic products exports have increased by 80 times, from $13 million to $1.04 billion.
“Exports during 2019-20 were affected by the Covid pandemic. Until then, exports of organic products witnessed a growth exceeding 25 per cent annually since 2016-17,” said M. Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda).
“Between 2016-17 and 2018-19, organic products exports increased by 25 per cent, 40 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively,” the Apeda Chairman said. The authority functions as the secretariat for the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) that is implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce.

Some of the major initiatives include, paperless office, enabling digital signatures and electronic payment, phase-wise delivery of online services, monitoring and evaluation The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) has launched a slew of information technology (IT) initiatives over the last couple of years to help speed up shipments through “more efficient and effective” measures.
According to Apeda Chairman M Angamuthu, the Commerce Ministry arm has emerged as a pioneer in making use of IT for promotion and development of exports and thus help shippers speed up their process.
“The emphasis has been to simplify and rationalise existing rules, besides introducing information technology to make governance more efficient and effective,” the Apeda Chairman said.
