Kate Arduser is the wellness program manager with the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska and the mother of two school-age children. And this last year of on and off remote education has been a learning process for both her and her family.
Like many parents, Arduser said she has struggled while fumbling through working from home and simultaneously helping her two daughters with school. Sometimes those things I need to do for work make it so I don t notice the phone call when we re supposed to talk to the teacher, said Arduser. And that puts me in a cycle of feeling like I am not doing the things that I m expecting to do well. And then I have to take a deep breath, and remember to have a good attitude, and to do my best, and to hopefully help my children do their best.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact in-person learning in Unalaska, nearly a third of the island s high school population is failing at least one class, according to school officials. And some seniors could be at risk of not graduating.
The Unalaska City School District is normally a top performer. Last year, the district had a 97 percent graduation rate. But this year, district officials say they re alarmed at the number of high schoolers failing classes, as they learn under a hybrid model that limits their time in classrooms.
Thirty percent of all high school students are failing at least one class, according to High School Principal Jim Wilson.

Four finalists have been selected in the Unalaska City School District s search for a new superintendent.
John Conwell announced his resignation from the position in November and is expected to retire when the semester ends. The four finalists will undergo teleconference interviews next week, the district said in a statement.
The finalists include Helen Cheek, a director of grants at the Yukon Flats School District; Larry Markuson, who has 18 years of educational experience, including time as a superintendent in Montana; Maurice Vail, another superintendent from Montana; and Dr. Robbie Swint Jr., who has over a decade of experience in U.S. Department of Defense schools.
