New weekly unemployment claims in Rhode Island increased last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
New claims, a proxy for layoffs, rose to 5,546 in the week ending April 17, up from 4,973 the week before, the labor department said.
Last year at this time, there were 18,078 new claims in Rhode Island as businesses laid off and furloughed their employees in the early days of the pandemic.
U.S. unemployment claims dropped to 547,000 last week, down 39,000 claims from 586,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis.
New claims have dropped to their lowest level since before the pandemic, a positive sign for the country s economic recovery. Last Thursday s report also showed U.S. jobless claims dropping to their lowest level since before the pandemic, and economists expected jobless claims to creep back up last week. That didn t happen.

New weekly unemployment claims in Nebraska increased last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
New claims rose to 2,015 in the week ending April 3, up from 1,881 the week before, the labor department said.
Last year at this time, there were 27,054 new claims in Nebraska.
U.S. unemployment claims rose to 744,000 last week, up 16,000 claims from 728,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Daniel Zhao, a senior economist with the career site Glassdoor, called last week’s increase more of a blip and not a step in the wrong direction, pointing to the jobs report released last week that showed the U.S. economy gained 916,000 jobs last month.
