Warner Bros.’ DC Films unit has pulled the plug on Ava DuVernay’s “New Gods” and James Wan’s “Aquaman” spinoff “The Trench,” the studio announced on Thursday.
The projects had both been in development for the last three years.
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. and DC said in a statement. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. New Gods, which was going to be directed by
Ava DuVernay, and the
The Trench. Reasons for the cancelations vary –
New Gods was set to have Darkseid as a villain, and Warner Bros. apparently doesn’t want to return to that character so soon after
Zack Snyder’s Justice League, whereas the studio thinks an
Aquaman sequel is good enough and they don’t need to worry about spin-offs set in that world.
