Over 80 killed in Myanmar military crackdown UN envoy calls for ‘strong action’

YANGON: Reports emerged on Saturday of more than 80 killed in the latest bloodletting by Myanmar’s military, as the country’s own ambassador to the United Nations called for “strong action” against the junta, reports AFP.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February, with protesters refusing to submit to the junta and demanding a return to democracy.
After over two months of military rule, efforts to verify deaths and confirm news of crackdowns have been greatly curtailed by the junta’s throttling of mobile data within the country shunting most of the population into an information blackout.

His social media handles have been taken down following anti-coup comments
Myanmar s military junta arrested top model and actor Paing Takhon for speaking out against the coup that ended the country s short-lived democracy. Takhon is the latest in a line of celebrities targeted by the military as a part of a growing clampdown to suppress resistance to the February coup.
His social media handles, which had more than a million followers, have also been taken down.
The 24-year-old model was taken away at 5 am local time on Thursday after eight trucks carrying soldiers and police arrived at his mother s house in North Dagon, a township in Yangon. Takhon s sister, Thi Thi Lwin, wrote on Facebook that around 50 soldiers came to arrest her brother.

Among the daily stream of photos revealing the cruelty of Myanmar’s junta, blurred stills of the last moments of a young lady in pink, left to die on a deserted, dark street in Mandalay, paint a picture of abject horror.
In one of the two photos, taken from a distance and shared widely on social media on Sunday night, the grievously injured woman lies motionless in sleeveless pale pink overalls, soiled by dirt and perhaps her own blood, one arm outstretched.
