Makabayan bloc lawmakers on Tuesday, March 11 blamed government for the death of Joseph Canlas, a peasant leader who died after contracting 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID 19) while under police detention.
Canlas, chairman of the Alyansang Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luzon, was among the activists who were arrested in simultaneous raids conducted by joint military and police operatives in Luzon during the recent observance of Holy Week.
He was reportedly arrested on the strength of a court-issued warrant. A gun was also allegedly found in his possession during the raid.
Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said Canlas was healthy when arrested by police authorities last March.

Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-List Representative France Castro on Saturday criticized the Philippine National Police (PNP) for asking a court for a list of lawyers and human rights defenders representing alleged communists.
Castro said the PNP used this modus operandi (MO) against teachers and teachers’ union during its profiling campaign in early 2018 and is now using the same MO on lawyers representing ‘’Communist Terrorist Group (CTG)’’ personalities in the court.
In the letter dated yesterday, March 12, to the Office of the Clerk of Court, Hall of Justice, Barangay Capoocan, Calbayog City, Police Lieutenant Fernando Calabria Jr., Calbayog police intelligence officer, asked that he be furnished with the list of the lawyers for submission to ‘’higher PNP offices.’’

Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-List Rep. France Castro slammed on Thursday the Department of Education’s (DepEd) decision to extend the current school year, lamenting that it would also extend the “suffering” of learners, teachers and parents.
“Extending the school year without addressing the basic problems of the Duterte administration’s distance learning program would only extend the suffering and hardships of teachers, learners and their parents,” Castro said in a statement.
The DepEd announced last Tuesday, March 2, that it is adjusting the calendar for school year 2020-2021 “to allow schools to implement intensive intervention and remediation activities for learners and to give time to teachers for the different learning modalities.”
