PUSH was involved with a new National Geographic podcast as well. âA Reckoning in Tulsaâ details the history of the 1921 race massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which destroyed the vibrant Greenwood neighborhood and left what some believe to be 300 Black Tulsans dead, buried in unmarked graves. Two years ago, bassist Dave Riggs, hurdy-gurdy player Ryan Baker and fiddler Claire Sweeney began experimenting with traditional Celtic and Eastern European music. From there, the musical trio became Autumn Equinox.
But whatâs unique about this particular band isnât the music itself rather how they play it, according to Riggs.
âWhat attracts me to it is not the tradition but the sort of hypnotic nature of this nyckelharpa, which sounds like a dozen fiddle players playing at once and the hurdy-gurdy, which almost has a psychedelic sound to it,â Riggs said. âThat to me is what makes this combination of our instruments and the music that we play really unique.â
