Some 2,000 miles away from DC, Utah’s sleepy capital city which as of late only pierces the national dialogue bubble when Mitt Romney or Real Housewives-related news ensues also bore witness to a rally of its own. Atop Salt Lake City’s Capitol Hill, approximately 400 people, some heavily armed, descended upon the Utah statehouse. The year began with the end of the controversial Southern Red Sands Mine project in Kanab, and by the middle of January there was just one thing at the top of people’s minds: Impeachment. It was also this month that the Utah Department of Health faced its first crisis of the year: Condomgate. Gov. Gary Herbert quickly blocked the HIV prevention campaign that sent out thousands of condoms with sex-positive, Utah-themed packaging. But his plan to protect Utahns from such tastlessness wasn’t entirely effective full sets of the profalactics with messages like “Greatest Sex on Earth and “Explore Utah’s Caves” appeared on Ebay days later.

This year s event, which honored 53 people who died, was held virtually to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Utah’s homeless advocates and service providers gathered for a virtual vigil on Monday the longest night of the year to honor the lives of the 53 homeless or formerly homeless people who died in the state in 2020. They were “daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives and friends,” said Pamela Atkinson, a community advocate for the homeless, during the vigil.
