May 27, 2021 Dr. Beach has released his list of the Top 10 Beaches in America for 2021. Once again, Coast Guard Beach in Eastham has made the list. This time landing at #10.
As Dr. Beach puts it: Coast Guard Beach, accessible by bicycle from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center or shuttle bus, is located where a sand spit extends southward from the glacial sea cliffs. The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs, allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay. During the summer, beachgoers take quick, refreshing dips in the ocean as water is chilly. In recent years, seals have moved northward from Monomoy Island Wildlife Refuge into the populated beaches, which has attracted great white sharks. Note the red flags with shark images on days when these predators are around and follow the advice of lifeguards.

Some know Dr. Beach as Stephen P. Leatherman, a professor of earth and environment at Florida International University. He has released his list of America s best beaches since 1991, and Coast Guard Beach has often made the cut. This year, the Cape Cod National Seashore strand was ranked number 10, with number one honors going to Hapuna Beach State Park in Hawaii.
WELLFLEET Cape Cod National Seashore operations will begin Memorial Day weekend with fewer COVID-19 restrictions, according to a press release. We are moving toward pre-pandemic experiences, Superintendent Brian Carlstrom wrote. While acknowledging pandemic protocols were changing, Carlstrom said the National Park Service will remain focused on keeping staff, volunteers and the public safe through wearing masks when appropriate, maintaining social distance, and observing capacity limits.”
Beginning May 29, fees will be collected on Saturdays and Sundays and on Memorial Day at Little Creek/Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, and Race Point and Herring Cove beaches in Provincetown. Nauset Light and Head of the Meadow beaches will be fee-free until June 17.
WELLFLEET – The Cape Cod National Seashore’s popular ranger-guided programs this season will more closely resemble a normal summer, but don’t expect events to be back at pre-pandemic levels just yet, Seashore officials say.
“We’re looking at what we can do safely, given the state and National Park Service protocols,” said Sue Moynihan, the Seashore’s chief of interpretation and cultural resources management, “and given the current infection rates around the country and right here in the county.”
It’s difficult to plan too far in advance, Moynihan added, so the park’s activity schedule remains fluid.
Summer 2021 in the Seashore will be “much better than last summer,” but it won’t look like 2019, she said.
