St Anthony, Good Shepherd start vaccinating health workers

PENDLETON — The atmosphere in the St. Anthony Hospital conference room on Monday, Dec. 28, was upbeat. Ten health care workers who waited there to receive the hospital’s first coronavirus vaccinations could barely contain their elation. “This is huge,” said Dr. John McBee. “This is the beginning of the end of the pandemic.” Each person answered screening questions and signed a consent form. McBee went forward first, sat down in the hot seat and rolled up his left sleeve. Tracy Wart, infection prevention nurse at St. Anthony, cleaned the surgeon’s arm with alcohol and prepared the syringe. “Ready?” Wart asked.

Health department releases vaccine information

Umatilla County Public Health released an update on the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, Dec. 22, stating that the vaccine has arrived in the county in “very limited amounts.” Due to the limited amount, it will be distributed in phases, based on Oregon’s schedule for the vaccine. Front-line health care workers, who care for patients with COVID-19, are first in line. “It will be several months before COVID-19 vaccine is available to the general public,” the release stated. The health department asked that people refrain from calling their offices with questions about their vaccine eligibility, and instead look for updates on the vaccination page of the department’s website at ucohealth.net/main/COVID-19%20Vaccination%20Webpage.pdf.
