Downtown Worcester free COVID-19 testing site busy before Christmas WORCESTER – Kionna Hazzard is hoping she can spend Christmas at her aunt s house. Hazzard, of Southbridge, was among many others at the COVID-19 testing site inside Mercantile Center at 201 Commercial St. on Tuesday. She just returned from a trip to Puerto Rico and said she wanted to be tested. If the test is negative, she said, she is going to spend Christmas at her aunt’s house. If the test is positive, she’s staying home alone. William Smith, project manager for the testing site, said he has been seeing a big push because of Christmas. People want to get a clean bill of health so they can spend the holidays with their immediate family, he said.

The health care systems have jointly submitted the first in a series of required filings for UMass Memorial to become the parent company of Harrington, UMass Memorial said in a statement Tuesday. This would make Harrington Hospital, system employees and the medical group members of the UMass Memorial Health Care system. UMass Memorial said it anticipates it could take up to four months to complete the final regulatory steps.

Jeanne Peters, a rehab patient at The Reservoir in West Hartford, Conn., was given the first COVID-19 vaccination in a long-term care facility through a program with CVS. The program formally launched on Monday with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine going to facilities across 12 states. The company expects to vaccinate up to four million residents and staff at over 40,000 long-term care facilities through the program, CVS said in a statement.

No appointment necessary. Use the entrance at 201 Commercial St. - 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday and Tuesday. The testing is sponsored by the city of Worcester and the UMass Memorial Health Care COVID-19 Equity Task Force.  Free testing is also available at Quinsigamond Community College, 670 West Boylston St. An appointment is required.
