Vic Brown, the executive director of the Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, revealed recently that the Central Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force has been awarded the Appalachia HIDTA Task Force of the Year for West Virginia.
The CRDVCTF was selected for the honor from among 16 HIDTA task forces from throughout West Virginia, according to a press release from Brown.
The CRDVCTF is led by the West Virginia State Police, but it features a joint effort with participation from the Oak Hill Police Department, the Fayette County Sheriff s Department, the Fayetteville Police Department, the Nicholas County Sheriff s Department and the Summersville Police Department. The task force functions in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

U.S. Attorney s Office for the District of Northern West Virginia issued the following announcement on Feb. 10.
U.S. Attorney Bill Powell, of the Northern District of West Virginia, has announced his resignation effective midnight on February 28, 2021.
Powell, a graduate of Salem College and West Virginia University College of Law, had previously served as the Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Jefferson County, West Virginia. He has also held positions as a Member of Jackson Kelly, PLLC, and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Two Men Sentenced to Federal Prison for Drug Trafficking Conspiracy in Kodiak
The pair was responsible for introduction of over a kilo of methamphetamine into the community of Kodiak
Anchorage, Alaska – U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder announced Carlito Marcilino Velasco, 61 of Juneau and Don Irenio Castro Santiago II, 37, a citizen of the Philippines residing in Anchorage, have been sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess to federal prison for their roles in a drug trafficking conspiracy in Kodiak.
According to court documents, Velasco and Santiago II allegedly devised a plan involving themselves and others to possess and distribute methamphetamine in Kodiak. During the drug conspiracy, Velasco travelled to California to purchase methamphetamine from sources in California for distribution in Alaska. Velasco then packaged and mailed the methamphetamine via United States Postal Service (USPS) to Juneau, where a co-conspirator repackaged it and then mailed it via US

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia State Police said a man is in custody after a chase on Franklin Road Thursday morning.
Just before 9 a.m., undercover officers with HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area), a task force made up of law enforcement members from Roanoke County, Roanoke City and Virginia State Police, spotted a car being driven by a known wanted man, who had multiple warrants out for his arrest in Roanoke County and Botetourt County.
USCG offloads $8.5 million of cocaine in San Juan
The Coast Guard Cutters Mohawk and Charles David Jr. transferred custody of two suspected smugglers and $8.5 million in seized cocaine to federal agents at Coast Guard Base San Juan Thursday, following the interdiction of a drug smuggling go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea.
The interdiction was the result of multi-agency efforts in support of U.S. Southern Command’s enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Western Hemisphere, the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) programs, and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force (CCSF). The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico is leading the prosecution for this case.
