Description of the situation: Mushtaq Ahmed and the release on bail of cartoonist Mr.  Ahmed Kabir Kishore. The two had been held in pre-trial detention for ten months for their criticism of the authorities’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 25, 2021, Mushtaq Ahmed was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where he had been transferred from the Kashimpur Jail. At the time of publication of this urgent appeal, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

On March 3, 2021, the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh granted bail for six months to Ahmed Kabir Kishore, pending further investigation. At the time of publication of this urgent appeal, Ahmed Kabir Kishore has not yet been released.

Law News Law Desk Law Desk On February 4, 2021 the High Court Division of the Supreme Court issued two new directives in response to a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). In the new two directives, the Court ordered the Directorate General of Fire Service and Civil Defence to take required steps to spray the roads with water alongside its regular responsibilities. It also ordered Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation to spray the roads as well as the plants on the central reservations and directed Dhaka WASA to supply sufficient water to the city corporations for this purpose.

Govt working to incorporate ADR provisions in existing laws: Law Minister The New Nation Staff Reporter : Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has said that the government is working to incorporate the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provisions in different existing laws of the country to make commercial dispute resolution easier and less time consuming. In view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the government under definitive instruction by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has enacted the Use of Information Technology by the Court Act, 2020 to carry out trials through digital means, the minister said. Our judiciary has already started conducting court proceedings via video conferencing. However, we are yet to make progress regarding the virtual form of ADR. Suggested virtual ADR practices can either be based on phone conferences or internet-supported video conferences.

2nd International law Fest 2020 organised by NILS Bangladesh The Bangladesh Chapter of the Network for International Law Students (NILS) with the event support of Liberation War Museum organised the 2nd International Law Fest 2020 from 17 to 19 December 2020. Due to the pandemic situation, this year s Law Fest was held virtually. The theme of this year s event was International Conflict & Human Rights . The 2nd International Law Fest 2020 was dedicated to the memory of the martyrs of our great Liberation War 1971. Luthfunnahar Shancyi, Vice President (Advocacy), NILS Bangladesh with cooperation of the national board members and a team comprising of 40 organisers and volunteers organised the event.
