An outbreak of suspected African swine fever (ASF) has killed more than 100 domestic pigs in Lunglei district of Mizoram, officials said.
Mizoram’s Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Hmarkunga said the outbreak has been restricted to Lungsen village and preliminary tests have pointed to ASF as the cause of death of the pigs.
Official sources said preventive measures were being taken to contain the spread of the disease.

GUWAHATI: Over 100 domestic pigs died in a Mizoram village and preliminary tests indicated African swine fever (ASF) as the cause of the deaths.
Official sources said preventive measures were being taken to contain the spread of the disease.
“There is an outbreak of the disease in Lungsen in Lunglei district. Over 100 pigs died till yesterday (Wednesday),” Mizoram’s Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Dr Hmarkunga told this newspaper on Thursday.
He said as a part of the preventive measures, the import and export of pigs to and fro the village had been restricted.

As many as 376 birds, including 303 poultry birds, were found dead amid avian influenza scare in Maharashtra on Tuesday, an official from the state animal husbandry department said on Wednesday.
A total of 19,076 birds have been found dead in the state since January 8, the official said.
Samples of birds found dead before Tuesday have been sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD) in Bhopal, he said.
The institute has confirmed avian influenza strain in samples of poultry birds from Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Nanded, Hingoli, Akola and Buldana districts, the official said.
