May 16, 2021 Share The Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique, which is hit hard by the insurgency carried out by the Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jamo (ASWJ), also locally known as Ansar al-Sunna, is now facing the problem of a worsening humanitarian crisis to add to the dire security situation. On May 7, 2021, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) published a report titled, “Urgent need in Mozambique: Cabo Delgado situation”. The UNHCR report states that the situation in Cabo Delgado is a protection and humanitarian crisis, with widespread reports of human rights abuses fuelled by an escalating violence by non-state armed groups. Thousands of civilians have been killed or injured, houses have been looted and burned, and agricultural land destroyed. Women and girls have been abducted, forced into marriage, raped, and subjected to other forms of sexual violence, highlighting the urgency of bringing gender-based violence prevention and response to the forefront.
