UI Police investigating string of residence hall burglaries

University of Iowa Police are investigating a string of residence hall burglaries. According to a news release from the UI Department of Public Safety, UI Police have received three reports of potential burglaries occurring in three different residence halls between February 16 th and March 1 st. UI Police say they strongly encourage all residence hall occupants and those in the campus community to lock their doors at all times, even if they are only leaving their rooms for a short time. Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1. If you have any additional information about these incidents, UI Police ask that you call them at (319) 335-5022, or submit an anonymous crime tip by using the Rave Guardian app.

Some of the potential models call for a significant move away from the traditional model of policing. The University of Iowa is now taking public comment on proposals to reimagine campus safety and the role of police officers. What was initially a process limited to the UI community and those with a university-issued HawkID is now accessible to the public writ large, following criticism from activists and open-government advocates. The review stems from this summer’s protests against systemic racism and police brutality.

March 1 update: The University of Iowa s Reimagining Campus Safety action committee is no longer requiring a HawkID in order to provide feedback on the group s prototypes.  The group is accepting feedback until 5 p.m Friday.
