EU Court of Justice ruling on ritual slaughter is systemically dangerous

The ruling was factually wrong, legally problematic, discriminatorily hypocritical and systemically dangerous. The case arose in Belgium, where it is now illegal to slaughter livestock that have not first been stunned into unconsciousness, despite the fact that both Muslim Halal and Jewish kosher rituals require the animal to be conscious when it is slaughtered. To be clear, the word ‘stun’ is something of a euphemism in this context. The most common pre-slaughter stunning methods include the use of captive bolt guns, which shoot a steel bolt into the animal’s brain, electrical stunning, which involves sending a high voltage electric current through the animal’s brain and/or heart, and CO2 stunning, in which the animals are gassed and eventually either fall unconscious or die through hypoxia or asphyxia- but not instantaneously. On the flipside, kosher ritual slaughter (

How does the Charter of Fundamental Rights work?

Celebrating its 20th „birthday”, the Charter of Fundamental Rights is an important and groundbreaking document. The participants of the webinar „Reinforcing the EU Charter: Rights of people in the EU in the next decade” organised by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the European Commission under the media patronage of EURACTIV and EURACTIV Poland, had no doubts about it. But they also pointed out that the Charter’s provisions still need to be better implemented at the national level to protect citizens in their daily lives. It has been 20 years since the proclamation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, a core document ensuring the rights and freedoms of the EU citizens. It is also a document with the same force as the Treaties. Its provisions became binding in the EU 11 years ago, when it entered into force together with the Lisbon Treaty.

Letters to the editor - December 19, 2020

There’s no fundamental human right to abortion In her letter ‘Rights-denied women’ (December 8), Isabel Stabile said that she belongs to Doctors for Choice. What choice is she referring to? Her choice is to destroy the life of living human beings in their mother’s womb. That is a bad choice! Stabile must remember that she is a medical doctor to save human lives as much as possible. Promoting abortion contradicts her medical profession. The photo used with the letter promotes her mistaken agenda and is misplaced. That photo suits the Pro-life Movement. In the photo we read:  choice is physical, mental, emotional health care. Yes, when you choose life. When you choose death for the living child in their mother’s womb, choice will be physical, mental and emotional destruction.

EU National Regions Signature Drive Deadline Extended Once Again

EU National Regions Signature Drive Deadline Extended Once Again The deadline of the Szekler National Council’s (SZNT) signature drive, aimed at ensuring European Union protection for ethnic regions, has been extended by three months. As there are still thousands of signatures to be collected, the pandemic- related prolongation might be beneficial for the initiative. The European Commission has recently decided to extend the deadlines of all European Citizens’ Initiatives that were in progress on November 1 by another three months.  FactThe initiative aims to convince the European Commission to create a policy that instead of directing cohesion funds to national governments alone, allocates some of the transfers directly to ‘ethno-regions’ in order to help them develop their infrastructures and thereby preserve their linguistic and cultural heritage.
