Council Rejects Proposal For Immediate Disclosure Of Some Campaign Donations

Council Member Greg Landsman says he s working on a new version of his proposal to require sitting council members and the mayor to report donations above $200 within 48 hours. The donations would be published on a new city website where the public could search the filings. I think this is a really important step to restore public trust as it relates to contributions and votes, how policy is made, Landsman said. Some members of the Law and Public Safety Committee objected to the measure, saying it would be a burden to require such frequent filing.

Cincinnati s New Level-Up Program Matches Youth With Career-Readiness Jobs

Becca Costello / WVXU About 245 young Cincinnatians will be matched with career-training jobs starting next month, thanks to a new city-funded program. The Level Up: Launch Your Career program is a partnership between the city and several local organizations, headed up by the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio. Chief Impact Officer Dorothy Smoot says the Urban League has been working on youth employment for the last decade, and this is an exciting next step. It will help our young people have access to employers; access to support while they re going through the training; and access to supportive services that will help them address any of the issues that would keep them from being successful, Smoot said.

Council Approves Temporary Eviction Protections, Votes Down Permanent Change

Nick Swartsell / WVXU Temporary eviction protections are now in place in Cincinnati, but council voted against a proposal Wednesday to make the change permanent. Council Member Greg Landsman introduced both ordinances after the Hamilton County Municipal Court decided to no longer enforce a national eviction moratorium. The measure with temporary pay to stay protections will be in effect only as long as Ohio s pandemic state of emergency is active. It allows tenants facing a lack-of-payment eviction to halt proceedings if they can pay all back rent and fees. This is obviously one of the most significant things we can do to protect our children, to protect our families, to protect our neighborhoods, and ultimately ensure that landlords are made whole, Landsman said.
