Introduction
In February 2021, the European Union’s (EU) Foreign Affairs chief Josep Borrell arrived in Moscow to discuss “the fraught state of EU-Russia relations”
[1] amidst the ongoing trial of opposition leader Alexey Navalny
[2] and protests against his detention. As Borrell visited, Russia announced the expulsion of three European diplomats (one each from Germany, Poland and Sweden), who it accused of participating in the protests. The EU defended the diplomats and said they were only observing the events, and announced retaliatory expulsions. Borrell himself was sharply criticised by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for what they called his “ill-executed” visit that was a “complete disaster”.
MEPs call for carbon price on certain EU imports from less climate-ambitious nations

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are calling for the implementation of a carbon price on certain imports from less climate-ambitious countries to raise global ambition on climate change.
Parliament adopted a resolution on a World Trade Organisation-compatible EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), with 444 votes for, 70 against and 181 abstentions.
MEPs are supporting putting a carbon price on certain goods imported from outside the EU if these countries are not ambitious enough about climate change.
The Spanish Supreme Court has taken the first steps to secure the extradition of former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont, who led an illegal attempt to secede from Spain in 2017.
In a vote held on Monday but made public on Tuesday, the European Parliament voted to lift Puigdemontâs immunity, with 400 votes in favor, 248 against and 45 abstentions. There were very similar votes in connection with Antoni ComÃn and Clara PonsatÃ, two Puigdemont aides who fled Spain with him following an unauthorized referendum on independence held on October 1, 2017.
Without parliamentary immunity, all three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) could face extradition to Spain, where they are wanted by the Spanish justice system in connection with the illegal referendum and breakaway bid.
