Women panel welcomes passage of domestic violence bill

National January 18, 2021 PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women on Sunday welcomed the passage of the Domestic Violence Bill and lauded the efforts of the provincial government. According to a press release, chairperson of the commission Dr Riffat said their efforts over the years had paid off and the legislation was undertaken to check the violence against women. She said violence against any woman was no longer a private matter and action would be taken against whoever inflicted physical, psychological, emotional and economic harms on the women. “We are committed to implementing of the law and to provide safe environment to all without any gender discrimination as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” Dr Riffat added.

Passage of ministers’ salary bill triggers heated debate in KP Assembly Top Story January 16, 2021 PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Friday passed the KP Ministers’ Salaries, Perks and Privileges (Amendment) Bill, 2021 after a heated debate as the opposition lawmakers complained that the perks and privileges of the ministers were being increased but Members Provincial Assembly (MPAs) were ignored. The amended act recommended payment of ministers’ utility bills by the departments concerned. The members from the government and opposition exchanged arguments over the passage of the bill. The treasury benches argued that the bill would help save the public exchequer as ministers’ bills were already paid by the government but now the department concerned would pay the bills to avoid penalty due to delayed payment.

KP opposition legislators vow to continue protest outside CM’s House National December 10, 2020 PESHAWAR: The protest being staged by the members of the opposition parties in the KP Assembly outside the Chief Minister’s House continued for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. They have established a sit-in camp outside the Chief Minister’s House. Members Provincial Assembly (MPAs) from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) attended the sit-in that continued till 5 pm. The protesting MPAs asked the government to accept their demands, including the provision of uplift funds and non-interference of Members National Assembly (MNAs) in their constituencies.
