Tony Vagneur: Roosevelt s affinity for Colorado made a lasting legacy

Saddle Sore A few years ago, as a friend and I prepared to ride the bike trail in Glenwood Canyon, we spied a mama bear and her cub slowly sauntering in the direction of the trail, and there was the thought that our paths might cross. Unperturbed, she turned northwest a bit and went around the hill behind the Yampa Spa. Piece of cake, although it brought to mind the Hotel Colorado, Teddy Roosevelt, and bears. All three go together like a written tercet in a musical score or, more commonly, three identical children born to the same mother on the same day.

As need for support grows, youth services organizations adapt

Students attend a fall backpacking trip through the Buddy Program’s LEAD (Leadership through Exploration, Action and Discovery) high school outdoor leadership program. To abide by COVID-19 safety guidelines, the program purchased single-person tents, served individually-wrapped meals and followed mask and social distancing protocols. The Buddy Program/Courtesy Image When COVID-19 brought life to a grinding halt in March, youth throughout the Roaring Fork Valley were left in the lurch. One after another, the hallmarks of being a teenager slipped away. Proms were canceled. Graduations came and went (from a distance). Spring sports were scrapped, fall athletics modified to meet COVID-19 guidelines: there would be no homecoming bashes, no senior night celebrations on the field.

Tyrolean Lodge still embraces old Aspen ideal on its 50th anniversary

The Tyrolean Lodge is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Aspen on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020. (Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times) You don’t have to be a skier to stay at Aspen’s Tyrolean Lodge but if you are, you’re in for a treat. The Tyrolean is celebrating its 50th anniversary this winter. It’s a holdover from when small ski lodges rather than mammoth luxury properties dominated the Aspen scene. The late Lou and Lynne Wille opened the Tyrolean in 1970. It’s still in the family, now operated by one of their sons, Pierre Wille. Pierre and his two siblings don’t have any plans to sell out, even though Aspen real estate prices continue to break new barriers nearly every year.
