The long wait is over for mountain bikers — more trails opening on Sunday

(Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times) The Roaring Fork Valley is about to get bigger for mountain bikers with the opening of trails in Aspen, Snowmass Village and Glenwood Springs. The popular Sky Mountain Park trail network will open Sunday along with the nearby North Rim and Seven Star trails. The Upper Coal Camp loop trail in South Canyon, west of Glenwood Springs, also opens on Sunday. “It’s going to be a great weekend to spend behind handlebars,” proclaimed the Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association in its weekly email newsletter on Friday.

Hudson Reed Ensemble to premiere web series

The Aspen-based Hudson Reed Ensemble will debut the pilot episode of its new original web series, “Confluence,” on Saturday. Filmed in the Roaring Fork Valley, it is set in the fictional mountain town of Confluence, Colorado, a few miles downstream from a famous ski resort. The series follows characters including a bartender and a polo farm owner. “They may live on opposite ends of the social and economic strata,” reads the theater company’s announcement, “but they all have one thing in common: They make very bad decisions.” The series follows the 2020 Hudson Reed online release of “Macbeth,” filmed locally last summer after the novel coronavirus pandemic forced cancellation of the company’s annual Shakespeare in the Park presentation.

Aspen Music Fest to charge $50 for Friday and Sunday lawn seating

The Aspen Times The Aspen Music Festival and School will charge audience members to sit on the lawn outside of the Benedict Music Tent this summer, organizers announced Thursday. Seating on the listening lawn for which people bring their own blankets, chairs and refreshments has traditionally been a free offering. The reservation fee will only be in place for the 2021 season. Alan Fletcher, president and CEO of the Aspen Music Festival and School, told members of the Pitkin County Board of Health on Thursday that lawn seating is usually a “free for all,” which is challenging to deal with under COVID protocols.

Bear, wildlife conflicts increasing around Aspen as weather warms

As the snow melts and spring comes out of its shell in the upper Roaring Fork Valley, human conflicts with bears, moose and mountain lions are increasing. Local wildlife officials have been fielding calls about bears they’ve gotten into cars so far though no home break-ins have yet been reported while moose have already been chased out of the downtown core and at least one dog has been snatched from a yard by a mountain lion, according to wildlife officials.

A Collage Of Creative Voices: A Mentorship Sparks Visual Art For One High School Senior

/ Roaring Fork High School senior Danny Carreno and his mentor through the Art Base s Claudette Carter Art Mentors program, Reina Katzenberger, at her Carbondale studio. The Art Base’s Claudette Carter Art Mentors program connects established artists in the Roaring Fork Valley with local students who have an interest in pursuing art in higher education or as a career. The mentorship culminates in an exhibition at the Art Base’s downtown gallery (through Fri. May 21). This winter, Roaring Fork High School senior Danny Carreno was paired with local multimedia artist Reina Katzenberger as part of the program. For a few hours each week during the shut downs and while Carreno was taking classes virtually, they helped each other keep creating and bonded over artistic expression as part of the program.
