New Colorado law gives public institutions more discretion in the hiring process for the CEO position

A bill that recently passed all three senate and house readings in Colorado will allow public institutions the option to withhold names of all but one of the final candidates during the hiring process for top leadership positions. But Matt Gianneschi, Chief Operating Officer & Chief of Staff at Colorado Mountain College, said the bill wouldn’t have much of an effect on CMC. “Our board of trustees is the only body that has the authority to hire a president. And to produce an employment agreement … that’s about as far as our rules concerning the (CEO) go for us, because the board itself conducts that search,” Gianneschi said. “We have an elected board of trustees, that is one of their responsibilities, they take it very seriously and I don’t know that this does anything to interrupt what they would otherwise follow in their procedures anyway.”

In the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Denver in January 2020 Jane Doe vs. Roaring Fork School District and Patrick Engle the family alleged district and school officials mishandled a student harassment case involving their daughter and other students in the fall of 2017. Plaintiffs said their daughter was subjected to ongoing harassment stemming from a sexual assault incident in which she was victimized by a male student in October 2016. The male student was a junior at the time, and the female a sophomore.

Third Esser installment of over $4 million in funding prompts discussion from Roaring Fork School Board

How can Roaring Fork schools make best use of $4 million? That question drove discussion among school board members Wednesday after the Roaring Fork School District received its third round of Esser federal funds (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds). The district is currently planning how to spend the surplus in a way that is best for the district, Chief Financial Officer Nathan Markham explained at the board meeting Wednesday night the parameters set in place for how the funds can be spent. “We have to spend the money in a, quote, ‘reasonable and necessary manner’ and they have some definitions around those, and it has to be in response to and in prevention of COVID-19. … We can spend them in a wide variety of ways,” Markham said.
