Samsung Galaxy S22 camera hide might be madness

For the past few years we’ve seen some wild concepts – and even wilder real world smartphone releases – with methods for hiding cameras. The issue was that the smartphone’s front-facing display required a big bezel. Notches, punch-holes, and mechanical bits to move the camera were all delivered on real devices. This week, Samsung revealed a solution the likes of which might… be too wild for the real world.
The next big hype piece in smartphone display technology is the semi-transparent display. This solution allows a front-facing camera to remain out of sight and functional. But the first versions of this solution suffer from one of two issues: faded photos or a visible camera upon closer inspection. Even with the solutions already released on real-world phones, the cons outweigh the pros.

Xiaomi is due to reveal a new Mi Mix Alpha model. It’s clear there will be no Mi Mix phone out this year but we can expect one in 2021. As we wait for the Xiaomi Mi 11 to be released on December 29, there’s another Xiaomi Mi phone in the works. The Mi Mix Alpha II has just been rendered. It’s not final and official yet but we find it interesting the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone is mostly display. The patent shows a 360-degree surround display plus a pop-up camera.
The all-around display idea is nothing new but with Xiaomi possibly applying the technology, we won’t be surprised if it becomes commercialized. The original Mi Mix Alpha idea was innovative and so we believe the next-gen will also have the same characteristics.
Xiaomi patents a smartphone design with surround display and pop-up cameras
Last year, Xiaomi shocked the world by unveiling Mi MIX Alpha, a concept smartphone with a surround display. This device never made into mas-production and therefore, it did not hit the shelves although the company had plans to sell this phone in a limited quantity in China. Now, more than a year later, a Xiaomi smartphone design patent with similar looks has emerged.
This new Xiaomi patent was unearthed by LetsGoDigital. According to the publication, the company applied it with The Hague Bulletin, part of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The documentation for the same got published on December 18, 2020.
In September 2019, Xiaomi released the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha smartphone. This smartphone is a futuristic device and never hit the shelves. Its surround display covers the front and a huge part of the rear of this device. On the part which is not a display, it has a triple camera setup. These are the only cameras on the phone since they can act as both front and rear cameras depending on the screen you are using. Although this device is yet to sell officially, Xiaomi seems to be preparing a successor.
According to LetsgoDigital reports, in June this year, Xiaomi applied for a design patent in the Hague Bulletin under WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The document was published on December 18, 2020, and shows a high-end Xiaomi smartphone that has an all-around display. In addition to about 16 patent sketches, the file also includes 4 color renderings.
