EMA approves AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine

BRUSSELS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) The COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University was authorized for use by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the drug regulator of the European Union (EU), on Friday. The EMA said it had assessed the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine and recommended that a formal conditional marketing authorization be granted by the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU. With this third positive opinion, we have further expanded the arsenal of vaccines available to EU and EEA (European Economic Area) member states to combat the pandemic and protect their citizens, Emer Cooke, executive director of the EMA, said in a statement.

Belgium reports coronavirus surge in children

BRUSSELS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) The number of new coronavirus cases has more than doubled among children under the age of 10 in one week in Belgium, Yves Van Laethem, inter-federal COVID-19 spokesman, said here on Friday. The actual rate of increase was 128 percent. The increase in contaminations among teenagers was 41 percent, he said. The latter figure included 355 deaths of respiratory origin reported in hospitals and 465 COVID-19-related fatalities in care homes and other social care institutions. The country registered 22,858 new infections in one day, taking the caseload to 3,153,487. The number of patients hospitalized went up by 142 to 27,308, with the number of those in intensive care increasing by 19 to 3,130. As the virus continues to circulate faster than expected, the French government is considering introducing stricter coronavirus measures in the coming days to stem an alarming rise in cases of the new COVID-19 variants, Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Thursday.
