But,an equally poignant date that has not yet caught the public imagination is 3/11. That’s March 11, 2020 when the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus – now better known as COVID-19 or just COVID – to be a world pandemic. That was well after the disease first broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019 – therefore the number 19 in the name – and well after the first case was detected in B.C. on Jan. 25, 2020.
Russian figure skater Kostornaia returns to former coach Tutberidze Tuesday, 9 March 2021
Russian figure skater Alena Kostornaia has returned to Eteri Tutberidze after announcing a split from the coach last August.
Seventeen-year-old Kostornaia revealed she would join an academy run by two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko last year.
She has now changed her mind about the move, announcing a return to Tutberidze after just six months with Plushenko. When I trained this season at another school, I understood that I could not completely force myself to do something, Kostornaia said according the Russian state news agency

This year s World Synchronized Skating Championships, due to have taken place from April 9 to 10 in Zagreb, have been cancelled because of what the International Skating Union (ISU) describes as the ongoing pandemic and detrimental consequences.
The Arena Zagreb is currently being used to treat patients suffering with COVID-19 as cases continue to rise in Croatia.
Following an online ISU Council meeting, the world governing body has also announced new dates for cancelled Beijing 2022 test events to be held in Olympic venues in the Chinese capital.
The International Speed Skating competition is scheduled for October 8 to 10, the Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy for October 13 to 17 and an ISU World Cup Short Track for October 21 to 24.
Legendary figure skating coach John Nicks coaches local skaters Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge. Nicks has coached U.S. and Olympic medalists in 41 World Championships and nine winter Olympic Games. He is a member of the U.S. Figure Skating and World Figure Skating halls of fame

The town of Breckenridge was blessed with an unexpected and atypical sporting opportunity this week at Stephen C. West Ice Arena. World and U.S. hall of fame figure skating coach John Nicks was in town for a ski trip with his daughter, their first time to Breckenridge, and he was connected with the town recreation department. They asked if Nicks, 91, would be interested in a figure skating clinic, and the recently retired longtime coach for U.S. Figure Skating couldn’t say “no.”
