Boxing: Leo-Fulton set for Jan 23

Albuquerque native Angelo Leo is scheduled to make the first defense of his World Boxing Organization super bantamweight (122-pound) title against Philadelphia’s Stephen Fulton on Jan. 23 in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Leo-Fulton matchup twice has been delayed by COVID-19. The two were to have met for the then-vacant title on Aug. 1, but Fulton (18-0, eight KOs) tested positive for the virus. Leo (20-0, nine KOs) defeated replacement opponent Tramaine Williams by unanimous decision for the title. Leo-Fulton then was scheduled for Dec. 19 but was postponed because Leo tested positive. Leo, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, Nevada, has said he has experienced only mild symptoms.

By Sports Reporter SPORTS minister Kirsty Coventry has hailed Zimbabwean boxer Brendon “Boika” Denes who lifted the country’s flag high by becoming the new World Boxing Organisation (WBC) Africa welterweight champion last weekend. The 25-year-old Denes, who is a member of the Charles Manyuchi Academy, overcame Mikka Shonena of Namibia at the Windhoek Country Club Resort on December 12. Denes, a former student at Great Zimbabwe University defeated the highly fancied Namibian who went into the fight undefeated in 16 fights. With the latest knockout victory, Denes improved his professional record to eight wins with five knockouts. His opponent had not lost a fight before Saturday’s defeat and stood on 16 fights all wins with three knockouts.
