Assistive technology refers to a field of technology that aids or assists individuals in a multitude of different ways: from the completion of daily chores to travel and education. Typically, assistive technology is designed for individuals with impairments or disabilities but if the technology is inclusive, it can be used by the wider population.
The World Health Organization reports that, as of 2020, there were approximately 2.2 billion visually impaired (VI) or blind individuals globally.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13: The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has been urged to accelerate and intensify its efforts towards Malaysia’s accession to the Marrakesh Treaty which is aimed at empowering and facilitating access to published works for persons who are blind or partially sighted.
Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi said accession would expedite improvements in three critical ways, namely digital accessibility, accessible publishing and cross-border access to learning materials.

Blind and visually impaired people blame the lack of braille books and teachers for their lower levels of education and struggles to be independent.
Forty-one-year old Jean Pascal Somb Lingom lost his sight to a measles attack when he was eight years old. Lingom says since he became blind in 1998, nothing much is changing and little attention is paid by the government to visually impaired persons in Cameroon.
