Toronto Raptors Superfan Nav Bhatia has returned an award he received for Global Indian of the Year to the Canada India Foundation (CIF).
In a lengthy statement issued on Monday evening, Bhatia explained his reasoning for giving back the award, which also came with a $50,000 donation to Bhatia’s World Vision Canada Daughters of India Initiative, which helps build washrooms for girls in need in India.
“On Sunday evening I watched my pre-recorded acceptance speech and the show for the first time like many. The past 24 hours were supposed to be a celebration for all those little girls in Rajasthan but it has been far from that,” stated Bhatia.

Farmers in India are currently taking part in the largest organized protests in the world, against three farming laws passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
The farmers many of whom hail from India’s northern Punjab and Haryana states are concerned that the laws, which bring corporations into the controlled agricultural sector, will leave them at the mercy of large corporations and will lead to the ultimate loss of their land and livelihood.
“I can’t stress enough that the reason the farmers’ protest has received as much attention as it has is because of social media and because of the diaspora,” Balpreet Singh, legal counsel with the World Sikh Organization told Daily Hive Vancouver.

TORONTO, Canada: Braving near-freezing temperatures and rains, hundreds of people in Canada’s major cities came out during the weekend to demonstrate their solidarity with the protesting farmers in India.
Rallies were organised in Montreal, Toronto and other Canadian cities against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government passing contentious farm bills in September, which farmers say will deregulate the agriculture sector and drastically affect their livelihoods.
“We are out here because the laws are simply unjust. It’s not fair what’s going on there,” Manpreet Singh Pabla, a Toronto-based entrepreneur protesting outside the Indian consulate, told Al Jazeera.
