ARLINGTON, Va. - A week before their season opener, the Washington Capitals had their first training camp scrimmage Thursday, giving Coach Peter Laviolette the first chance to see his new charges since he took over in September.
The Capitals split their group up into two teams, white and red. The forward lines and defensive pairings the team has been practicing with the past few days remained the same, with younger prospects split between the two sides.

He may not have played or even dressed for the tournament but Taylor Gauthier of the PG Cougars has a silver medal.
Gauthier was good enough to make a highly skilled Canadian roster for the World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton but like any highly motivated athlete, he wanted to compete at the highest level and not watch from the sidelines.
Canada was the best team at the tournament until the final. The Canadians dominated to a point that they outscored opponents 41-4 (never having trailed) prior to the 2-0 loss to the USA in the Gold Medal game.

Tuesday s World Junior Championship gold-medal broke a lot of hearts in Canada. The under-20 men s tourney is our neighbor s version of NCAA basketball March Madness here in the U.S. Team Canada getting blanked 2-0 by Team USA wasn t for lack of effort. The Canadians outshot the Americans 15-1 in the third period and 25-8 over the last two periods.
