NHL-leading nine Kings prospects selected to World Junior Championships
Rosters have officially been submitted and for the second-straight season, the Kings will have more prospects than any other NHL team at the World Junior Championships, to be held later this month in Edmonton.
Okay, before we get into that, can we get a little bit excited that a hockey tournament, in North America, is just ten days away? And only five if you count exhibition games!
I would have set the over/under right around 9 Kings prospects off the bat (we’ll say 8.5 so I look smart), and we ended up with exactly 9. Helge Grans was named to Team Sweden’s almost-final group of 26, but was the last roster cut, bringing the total out of double digits. The Kings second-round pick will be a very likely candidate for next season’s squad, but that’s for another day, scheduled about 365 days from now.

Although the 31 NHL teams haven’t formally asked their young prospects who have found extra playing time in European leagues to start returning to North America because there’s actually no agreement in place, many of these young players are headed back to North America on the advice of their player agents. In this post, I’ll help Ottawa Senators’ keep up with the movements of the team’s young prospects. Item One: Shane Pinto Is Tearing Up the NCAA
Shane Pinto is the Senators second round (32
nd overall) draft choice from the 2019 NHL Draft; and, so far, he’s made the team look wise for choosing him. In just seven games with the University of North Dakota, Pinto has scored three goals and 10 points to start off his sophomore (second) season.
Kings Just Miss a Perfect 10, Send Nine Prospects to World Juniors
It came down to the wire.
With Team Sweden set to board a plane this morning for Edmonton and the World Junior Championship, they needed to eliminate one player from their camp roster to get down to the 25-player maximum. Unfortunately, LA Kings prospect Helge Grans was the last player cut. It was a somewhat predicable result, though, for a myriad of reasons. He is only 18 years old, the team Sweden roster was a bit stacked to begin with, and they still had nine defenseman listed prior to the final roster decision. With five other offensive minded blueliners in that group, the odds just weren’t in his favor. On a more positive note, Grans should be a strong candidate for next year’s team.

The second and third most successful nations in European Mixed Team Championships history, England and Sweden, faced off in the final match of Group 1.
This perhaps should have been a match to decide who qualifies from the group but following Sweden’s 3-2 defeat to Estonia on day one, it was just pride at stake.
In the mixed doubles, world number nine and reigning European Games Champions, Marcus Ellis/ Lauren Smith, made no mistake against Melker Z-Bexell/ Johanna Magnusson. Following their straight-game victory, Marcus spoke about despite not reaching the podium last year, they are bringing a lot of confidence to Finland next year.
