Shabbat is a special day on the Jewish calendar. Itâs the only holiday celebrated on a weekly basis, giving those who observe a day to refrain from work, relax and unwind. After all, who doesnât need a true break from the distractions that cause stress during the rest of the week?
Given the benefits of a day off work for Jews and non-Jews, I have a suggestion for an additional holiday on the secular calendar in St. Louis: the âHoly Day of Obligation,â for local sports fans, also known as the Cardinalsâ home opener.
This is something Iâve been preaching since my days as sports editor of my high school newspaper. Thereâs no secular day that deserves a âday of restâ more than watching Americaâs pastime, while taking in the sights and sounds of an organization, and fanfare thatâs been around for generations. Like on Shabbat, fans get to relax, unwind, and forget about their stressful lives.
Toronto Blue Jays, GM Ross Atkins reach five-year extension
The Toronto Blue Jays and general manager Ross Atkins have agreed to a five-year contract extension through the 2026 season, the team announced Wednesday.
Atkins was hired as Blue Jays general manager in the 2015 offseason, with Toronto reaching the playoffs twice during his tenure, in 2016 and 2020. I cannot wait to continue our pursuit to bring World Series Championships back to Canada and celebrate with our fans when that day comes, Atkins said in a statement.
Prior to joining the Blue Jays, Atkins spent 15 years with the Cleveland Indians, with whom he pitched in the minor leagues before joining the front office.

The Toronto Blue Jays will keep a key member of their baseball operations staff around by signing general manager Ross Atkins to a contract extension.
The deal is for five more seasons and will keep the 47-year-old with Toronto until the end of the 2026 season.
“Simply put, Ross makes the Blue Jays better,” Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said in a press release. “I am extremely pleased that he will continue leading our Baseball Operations group during this exciting era for our players, staff, and most importantly, our fans, as we move closer to building a sustainable championship contender for years to come.”
