A favourite plant in my garden at this time of the year is the white bottlebrush, or Callistemon. It is an attractive evergreen shrub, native to Australia. They have become popular in Europe because of the spectacular flowers in axillary spikes, which look like bottle brushes. In colder areas they can be grown in pots, kept under cover in winter, giving plenty of water during the flowering period, little in winter. They require moist, well-drained soil and withstand pruning and drought. Mine was a gift from an elderly friend who passed away a few years ago. It has been planted in the garden now for about eight years. I put three fleeces on it though the winter months to protect it from the strong coastal, salt-laden winds, but it is well worth the effort.

Not only was Waterbury not on the list, but neither was my home city of Danbury or any other CT city for that matter. We do not rank at all in the Nutmeg State for nuts-out plant production.

To celebrate World Naked Gardening Day (5/1/21), Lawn Starter gathered metrics from big cities around the U.S. and examined key factors that include: local legality of nudity, gardener-friendliness and the share of the nudist population.
ARGUS gardening columnist Geoff Stonebanks did not let the cold Bank Holiday weather stop his latest fundraising success. Geoff has been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support since 2012. All his fundraising support is for the Macmillan Horizon Centre and now totals in excess of £85,000. All his fundraising is garden related but never before has he had to venture completely out of his comfort zone. When he posted on his social media that World Naked Gardening Day was taking place many friends suggested he should join in and go naked in a bid to support his charity fundraising.
