‘Islamabad to be free of polythene bags soon’

Islamabad: Islamabad will soon be polythene bag free, setting an example for other cities to emulate, vowed representatives of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration while addressing a webinar arranged to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day here Monday.
titled ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution,’ the webinar was organised by TheNetwork for Consumer Protection to focus on the experience of ICT in fighting plastics. Additional Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Rana Waqas Anwar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Islamabad (East) Babar Sahib Din, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Human Rights Zulfiqar Ali Jhammat, and Coordinator of International Youth Council Sadham Zarjahan addressed the webinar.

As China, the world s second-largest consumer market, maintains its momentum of economic recovery in the first two months of 2021, the growing consumption demand reminds the country of the importance of protecting consumer rights.
China s retail sales increased 33.8 percent from a year earlier in the first two months of 2021, beating expectations and marking a significant jump from a 4.6-percent growth in December, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showed Monday.

Plastics make up 19 per cent of all landfill waste and eight of ten items collected on beaches in TT. On World Consumer Rights Day, celebrated on Monday, Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon reminded consumers to be responsible for making purchases that contribute to plastic waste.
In a statement, Gopee-Scoon said the fight toward sustainability is, at its foundation, an individual effort.
“Hence, it requires each of us to make a more conscious effort in being a sustainable consumer to minimise waste in our daily routines. Responsible individuals create responsible families, responsible families create sustainable communities, and sustainable communities create a sustainable nation.”
Twenty-two per cent of all complaints received from the consumers in the country are related to the e-commerce platforms, Leena Nandan, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, said on Monday.
