We have seen a significant amount of movement and discussion around the net zero agenda in recent months. Developers and property owners are waking up to the challenge ahead and making commitments to ensure their projects lead the way towards achieving net zero carbon on construction and in operation.
Central to this discussion around the progress the big developers have made are the two main net zero commitments affecting the UK construction industry – the Better Buildings Partnership’s (BBP) climate change commitment and the World Green Building Council’s (WGBC) net zero carbon buildings commitment. Together these commitments set the minimum standard for developers who are serious about achieving net zero carbon.
Cities need $72bn boost to protect residents from climate change, CDP reveals
An analysis of the climate mitigation and adaptation plans of 800 major cities has found that one in four does not have the budget to protect their residents from climate impacts like floods.

Conducted by CDP, the analysis looks at the data disclosed through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System by 812 cities in 2020. Collectively, these cities are set to represent some 5% of the world’s population by the end of the decade.
While CDP welcomes the fact that more cities are disclosing using the system than ever before, with just 48 cities having used it in 2011, the analysis raises several red flags in terms of climate adaptation – preparing cities for environmental impacts that are already ‘locked in’.

Legal and General has appointed a UK Green Building Council director as its new head of sustainability.
John Alker will take the role at L&G Capital in August and will act as the firm’s strategic sustainability lead, proposing sustainability targets and measuring and communicating the firm’s social impact.

It follows LGC’s pledge last year to make all of its new housing stock operationally net zero enabled by 2030 – across all homes invested in or built by the group.
Alker, who has also served as a board director for the World Green Building Council, joined the UKGBC in 2007 in the year it was formed as director of policy and places. He also held the role of interim chief executive for four months in 2015.
