World Press Freedom Day: Actionaid charges FG to tackle media repression

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate 2021 World Press Freedom Day, ActionAid Nigeria, AAN, Monday, charged Federal Government on action to improve poor record on media repression.
This was stated by the Country Director, AAN, Ene Obi, which Obi pointed that in Nigeria, there has been a consistent and dangerous attempt by both state and non-state actors to gag the media.
According to her, there have been moves to “expurgate and censure the media and journalists while doing their legitimate duties.”

As the latest coronavirus wave ravages India in unprecedented ways, journalists are facing increasing crackdowns and constraints on their freedom of speech. While experts say the pandemic has accelerated official limitations on press across the region, the trend, however, has been consistent over the past years. They are using COVID as an excuse for everything. Journalists are being far more intimidated now than they have been in the past and the pandemic is being used as a cover, Nidhi Razdan, former executive editor of NDTV, told DW.
India was ranked 142nd among 180 countries on the World Press Freedom Index 2021, for a second consecutive year.

I congratulate all of us on World Press Freedom Day. The Government of Armenia attaches great importance to the role of free press for the development of the country, strengthening of democracy and ensuring public oversight.
I am sure that press has never been so free in Armenia as in the last three years, which has been recorded also by international organizations in their reports.
