China detains Bloomberg journalist for endangering ‘national security’
By Choekyi Lhamo
DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 15: China has detained a Chinese citizen named Haze Fan, a Bloomberg journalist on suspicion of endangering national security on Monday. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday, “Chinese citizen Ms Fan has been detained by the Beijing National Security Bureau according to relevant Chinese law on suspicion of engaging in criminal activities that jeopardize national security.”
The statement said that the journalist’s rights have been fully ensured and her family has been duly notified. Bloomberg’s editor-in-chief, John Micklethwait, described Fan as a “talented and integral part of our newsroom” and that the agency would work as hard as possible to help her and her family. He also added that the arrest would not deter its coverage of news from China.

Bulgarian National Television (BNT), the public broadcaster, touted some questionable figures in a November 30 broadcast of its main news after asking the question: If parliamentary elections were held today, which political entity would you vote for?
Its report cited combined support for the GERB-led coalition that appeared to be considerably overstated in comparison to most pollsters data. Against a backdrop of tightening [anti-pandemic] measures, the opinion about GERB does not see significant changes [it is still at] more than 20 percent, the presenter said. He went on to
Erdogan’s Attempts for Control of the Greek Press and the Eastern Mediterranean

On September 18, 2020, the front page of Dimokratia, a right-wing Greek newspaper, featured the headline “Siktir Git Mr. Erdogan,” meaning “F Off Mr. Erdogan.” In response, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leader of Turkey since 2014, filed an aggressively worded criminal complaint against the four people involved. Erdogan’s criminal report and the scramble by Greece and Europe to respond reveals the degree to which Erdogan’s desire for total control over his public image has expanded beyond Turkey’s borders, impacting the way he engages diplomatically with both allies and rivals. This diplomatic tension, unfolding against the backdrop of Turkey’s resumption of talks with Greece over energy control in the Eastern Mediterranean, highlights Erdogan’s use of journalists as leverage in his broader fight for regional hegemony.
