UNESCO, OHCHR get €7m to reinforce freedom of expression

Audrey Azoulay A new partnership between UNESCO and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) aimed at strengthening press freedom and the safety of journalists has been signed. Already a 7 million euros endowment has been announced by Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok at the 2020 World Press Freedom Conference co-organised by UNESCO and the Kingdom of the Netherlands on December 9 and 10. The partnership aims to put in place activities that support an independent and free press, ensure the safety of journalists – with particular focus on women journalists – promote access to information, and fight against impunity for crimes committed against media professionals.

of a UNESCO/ICFJ research published on 10 December show that 73% of women journalists who responded to the survey [1] reported having experienced online violence in the course of their work. Twenty-five percent had received threats of physical violence, while 18% of them had been threatened with sexual violence. The problem is not confined to the internet sphere, as 20% of women reported being attacked offline in connection with online violence they had experienced. The findings were discussed during a session entitled ‘Online violence: The New Front Line for Women Journalists – #JournalistsToo’, hosted by UNESCO and the ICFJ at the World Press Freedom Conference. The session featured award-winning journalists Rana Ayyub, Carole Cadwalladr, Ferial Haffajee, and Julie Posetti, ICFJ’s Global Director of Research.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) took up the issue discussed last week at the World Press Freedom Conference, which ended on December 10, on occasion of Human Rights Day. That same day, the UNESCO survey, implemented by the International Center for Journalists, informed that 25% of women interviewed acknowledged they were victims of threats of physical violence and 18% of sexual abuse.
