Forecasters are predicting an average Atlantic Basin hurricane season this year, and if some of the storm names leave Floridians with a sense of deja vu from Bill, Fred, Grace and Mindy to Sam and Wanda there s a reason. The World Meteorological Organization s Hurricane Committee recycles names every six years, according to the organization, with the exception of names of storms that were so destructive that the names are retired. After Florida and the rest of the East Coast saw a record number of 30 storms last year, a less-active season could be in the offing during the months to come, forecasters have said.

The World Meteorological Organization s Hurricane Committee recently released this season s names of hurricanes. This year s list of names, last used in 2015, includes two new names Elsa and Julian after two tropical storms, Erika and Joaquin, caused so much damage in 2015 that their names were removed by the organization, the Miami Patch reported.

Colorado State University (CSU) released its 2021 Atlantic hurricane season forecast on Thursday morning and is predicting another above-average season this year. CSU is calling for 17 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). Each of these numbers is above the typical season average of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. However, seasonal averages are in the process of being updated, according to Ken Graham, director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC). We will have those new averages going into the season. In fact, over the next couple of weeks we are going to release that information, Graham says.
