Recent surges of COVID-19 in India, S America left people gasping for breath before our eyes: UN chief
UNITED NATIONS, May 23: Recent surges of COVID-19 in India, South America and other regions have left people “literally gasping for breath before our eyes”, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said, warning that the pandemic is still “very much with us, thriving and mutating”.
“From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I warned that no one is safe until everyone is safe….Grossly unequal access to vaccines, tests, medicines and supplies, including oxygen, have left poorer countries at the mercy of the virus,” Guterres said in his statement to the Global Health Summit on Friday.
Guterres stressed that vaccinating quickly and thoroughly around the world, together with continued public health measures, are the only way to end the pandemic.
A total of 14,815,666 Indonesians have been administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine so far, according to data recorded by the coronavirus task .
Coronavirus vaccines have spawned 9 new billionaires
Profits from Covid-19 jabs have helped at least nine people become billionaires, a campaign group said Thursday, calling for an end to pharmaceutical corporations monopoly control on vaccine technology, NDTV reports. Between them, the nine new billionaires have a combined net wealth of $19.3 billion (15.8 billion euros), enough to fully vaccinate all people in low-income countries 1.3 times, The People s Vaccine Alliance said in a statement.
The alliance, a network of organisations and activists campaigning for an end to property rights and patents for inoculations, said its figures were based on the Forbes Rich List data.
