SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#GSAnews–The Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA)Board of Directors has appointed Simon Segars, CEO of Arm, as its Chair. Over the past two years, Segars has served as Vice Chair working in concert with Dr. Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD and outgoing GSA Chair, to guide the expansion of GSA’s ecosystem to include software, services, solutions and systems.
To support this expanded vision, GSA launched several initiatives including Interest Groups for automotive and Internet of Things (IoT). Apple Partner TSMC has Chosen a West Point Engineer & long-standing Executive to be their new Arizona Plant CEO
On December 23, Patently Apple posted a report titled Apple s Chip Supplier TSMC is now on a hiring Blitz for its US$12 Arizona Plant that will produce 5nm Chips. The report noted that TSMC was aggressively recruiting 600 engineers and executives for its new US plant.
Earlier this week TSMC announced that their Arizona plant will be led by Rick Cassidy, the head of the Corporate Strategy Office. Cassidy will concurrently serve as the CEO and general manager of the subsidiary TSMC Arizona.
Cassidy joined TSMC’s North American subsidiary as deputy general manager of customer management in 1997, and was promoted to general manager and chief executive officer of TSMC’s North American subsidiary in 2005. In 2008, he served as TSMC’s deputy general manager in charge of North American business, and was later promoted to senior deputy General manager.

Vahid Manian, the Chief Operating Officer of
Morse Micro (www.morsemicro.com), a semiconductor startup which is developing chips for the Wi-Fi HaLow market. We talked with Vahid who is also Vice Chairman of Board of Directors for Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA), was a Broadcom executive, and also who served at Ethertronics about Morse Micro s technology, as well as why the Australian company has an office and is hiring in Irvine.
What are you working on?
Vahid Manian: Morse Micro is an Australian startup company, headquartered in Sydney. We have offices in Irvine and in China as well. We are focused on developing Wi-Fi HaLow 802.11ah, which was solidified back in 2016. It s a new Wi-Fi starndard. Wi-Fi historically has been in the ISM band, the non-licensed band, including 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz and now 6 Ghz, and they also decided to take it down to sub-Ghz range mainly to support IoT devices. Chip and cloud expert Rani Borkar is now a member of Applied BoD
The leading semiconductor equipment supplier Applied Materials has added chip-design and cloud computing expert Rani Borkar to its Board of Directors effective Dec. 14. Rani Borkar held responsible tech positions at IBM and Intel. Now she currently holds the position of Corporate Vice President, Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure at Microsoft. Before Rani left Intel where she had worked for 27 years, she held corporate vice president and general manager position of the product development group heading processor and SOC development.
