The 2019 Long-Term Climate Risk Index, released at the annual climate summit in Poland by Germanwatch, listed the island nation after Puerto Rico, the worst affected country in the world which recorded nearly 3000 deaths due to natural disasters. The Index had analysed as to what extent the countries have been affected by impacts of weather-related catastrophies such as floods, landslides, storms, heat waves from 1998 to 2017.

The Blantyre-Blantyre project between the University of Glasgow and the College of Medicine (CoM) of the University of Malawi shares expertise between the two institutions. Its aim has been to establish a clinical laboratory facility at CoM to boost development of research and training programmes, medical interventions and policy development in Malawi around non-communicable diseases and their interface with infectious diseases, especially tuberculosis and malaria.

Major new research project to help pupils promote peace and make sense of the violent past Experts have begun a major new research project to help pupils around the world to use history and heritage to promote peace and make sense of past violence.  Members of the new Education, Justice and Memory Network (EdJAM) will work to give young people creative opportunities to discuss, make sense of and respond to war, conflict and brutality. The project is funded through a £2 million grant from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Global Challenges Research Funding (GCRF) Collective Programme. Experts in the network will help to spread the word about pioneering creative ways educators and others are helping to teach and learn about the violent past.
