Signal s hack of surveillance software a big concern for courts Questions linger about Cellebrite’s UFED software Credit: IDG A surveillance software used by Australian police to extract messages, photos and other crucial pieces of evidence used in criminal hearings, has come into question after vulnerabilities were discovered that could be exploited to create falsified evidence. Security concerns about a surveillance software developed by Cellebrite, were raised in a blog post last week by Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of the encrypted app Signal. Monday Briefing: Iraq s ongoing cycle of successes and disasters

Randa Slim Senior Fellow and Director of Conflict Resolution and Track II Dialogues Program News from Iraq often shifts between the good and the very bad. Successes and disasters alternate in a regular news cycle, and the last few days have been no exception. On April 18, information leaked to news outlets revealed that Iraq hosted direct talks on April 9 between Iranian and Saudi delegations, primarily to discuss Yemen. Israeli digital forensics firm Cellebrite, whose products are used by law enforcement but also repressive, murderous regimes and groups around the world, has been left with egg on its face after an analysis of its software found it to be riddled with easily exploitable vulnerabilities. The figurehead of the Signal encrypted messaging project, Moxie Marlinspike, got hold of a Cellebrite kit containing two key pieces of Windows software, the Universal Forensic Extraction Device (UFED) and Physical Analyser. How the Cellebrite kit ended up in the Signal team s hands remains unclear for now.
