IBM has revealed the name of its US$19 billion managed services business to be Kyndryl ahead of its separation from Big Blue at the end of 2021.
The vendor claimed the name was a portmanteau of ‘kin’ in kinship and ‘dril’ from tendril, which it says represents growth and “advancing human progress”. Moving away from the provisional name of NewCo, CEO Martin Schroeter claimed the new branding “evokes the spirit of true partnership and growth . Customers around the world will come to know Kyndryl as a brand that runs the vital systems at the heart of progress, and an independent company with the best global talent in the industry,” he said.
BlackBerry is having a busy week.
On April 12, the enterprise software company announced it was chosen by Shared Services Canada (SSC), the federal agency overseeing government IT systems, to be its supplier of secure productivity and communication software.
The multi-year agreement (no exact contract length was given) will provide public servants across the federal government access to BlackBerry Spark unified endpoint management (UEM) and BlackBerry SecuSuite, according to an April 12 news release.
“BlackBerry and the Government of Canada have been trusted partners for over thirty years,” said John Chen, executive chairman and chief executive officer, BlackBerry, in the release. “Shared Services Canada plays a critical role in Canada’s digital transformation strategy and we are very pleased to be their partner.”

IBM has settled on a new name for its $19 billion managed infrastructure services business once it’s spun out from Big Blue later this year: Kyndryl.
The Armonk, N.Y.-based technology giant revealed Monday that Kyndryl will be based in New York City and adopt a logo with the company’s name written in red and entirely in lowercase. The spinout of the 4,600-client Kyndryl business is expected to occur by the end of 2021, more than a year after the separation plan was first unveiled.
