Garment sector looks to green energy
Mon, 18 January 2021
Implementing sustainable clean energy practices in the garment industry will make the Kingdom an attractive and competitive investment destination, according to the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
GGGI Cambodia country representative Karolien Caser-Diez made the remarks during a European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia Breakfast Talk on January 14 under the theme “How can European brands meet other global climate goals in Cambodia?”
The event brought together development partners working in the field of sustainable energy alongside representatives from Adidas and the H&M Group, a member of RE100 – the global initiative for 100 per cent renewable energy.
“Peatlands are dynamic and diverse and the underlying causes of their degradation are as complex as the ecosystems themselves,” said Nazir Foead, head of Indonesia’s Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG). He made these remarks at the fourth and final webinar in a series convened by BRG and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), which sought to explore and develop criteria and indicators for peatland restoration in Indonesia.
The country has pledged to restore over 2 million hectares of degraded peatlands in response to the U.N. Paris Agreement adopted as an effort to hold global warming in check. However, as Foead said in his keynote address, it is not a simple task. One possible solution to this complex endeavor is to measure progress through an appropriate, easy-to-use set of criteria and indicators that are locally relevant and internationally recognized.

Parties to the Paris Climate Agreement are required to submit their revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by Dec. 31. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are both challenges and opportunities in ensuring that COP26, a U.N. climate change summit, builds confidence in the Paris Agreement as an effective tool to avoid climate crisis.
Frank RijsbermanAs 2020 comes to a close, the date is fast approaching for all parties to the Paris Climate Agreement to submit their updated commitments, or NDCs, that specifically delineate how each country will meet the common climate goals within the United Nations framework. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, COP26 climate talks were postponed to 2021, and instead a series of virtual events including the Climate Ambition Summit was held on Dec. 12, where countries could give updates on their adjusted NDCs.
